Deciding what program you want to pursue can be one of the hardest and most important decisions. I know there are high school students that already know exactly what type of career they want to be in and the program they want to study early on. However, that isn’t the case for everybody. Many students feel overwhelming pressure because they have no idea what program is the right option or what career they want in the future. I’m here to tell you that it’s okay! It’s normal for students to feel anxious and overwhelmed by the options. It’s hard to see where you want to be 10 years from now when you’re worrying about getting through your last year of high school.

I’m sure there are also tons of students who have considered pursing a business related undergrad. Maybe you took a few business courses in high school and did well. Maybe your parents are telling you it’s what you should do or you have friends who have chosen this path. Hmm… but maybe you’re still not sure if it’s the right decision for you. Well, I got you covered! As a recent graduate from a business administration advanced diploma program and a current business management undergraduate student, I thought I would share my list of top 5 reasons why you should study business or pursue a business related program. So, let’s get down to business!

Gain transferable skills

You can expect to gain many valuable transferable skills, which can be put to use in both everyday life, in the workplace, or if you decide to take a completely different career path. These skills are also a great asset and something every employer looks for. I can guarantee you that your communication, problem solving, written, and presentation skills are going to improve! This will happen, as you will have projects where you will need to use these skills to get the job done!

Explores both your creative and analytical side

Personally, the reason I chose business was because it allowed me to explore both my creative and analytical side. You will see this as you start the program, as you will take a wide variety of courses. For example, you will have marketing and advertising courses that explore your creative side, while your also taking finance and accounting classes that will require you to use your analytical skills. It’s the best of both worlds!

Remember that saying, “Everything comes down to who you know”, by pursuing an education in business it will provide you with great networking opportunities. You will have the ability to meet students, faculty, and professionals who have a strong passion for their fields or people who can open future career paths for you. Who knows the guy or girl you sit with in class may be your next business partner or maybe one of your favourite professors use to work for a company you have your eye on. Either way, I can promise you that you will meet many individuals who will inspire you, expand your knowledge, or even aid you in your future job search.

Builds your confidence

To be honest, when I began my studies I was very shy, passive, and didn’t have the confidence I needed to enter the workforce. By pursuing an education in business, it allowed me to evolve as an individual. It pushed me to expand my basic skills, knowledge, and allowed me the resources I needed to stand out. All of these aspects allowed me to gain confidence about myself. I can almost guarantee you that you will feel the same way once you have completed your first year. This is great, as I know that by the time I graduate from my program I will be ready to enter the workforce, and be an ideal candidate.

There you have it, my top 5 reasons why you should consider pursing an education in business! I hope this helps you make that important decision or opened your eyes on why pursuing a business related education is the right choice for you. I would also like to mention that Ted Rogers School of Management is one of Canada’s top business administration Universities and offers their students numerous undergraduate program options.
