Ryerson University’s prestigious President’s National Entrance Scholarship provides $10,000 in funding per year ($40,000 total) to a select group of incoming students who have demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishment and leadership qualities. The scholarship is renewable each year provided the student maintains a high GPA.

Sylvia Gehring is one of the 2019 recipients of the President’s Scholarship and will be starting her first year in the School of Accounting and Finance at TRSM this Fall.  Here is what she had to say about winning the scholarship, choosing TRSM and her goals in the program.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Business is my passion; from accounting and finance to entrepreneurship and marketing. I have applied my business skills in numerous entrepreneurial endeavours and as Co-President of my high school’s DECA chapter.

My passion for technology inspired me to co-found the first all-girls VEX robotics team at my high school.  This culminated in a great performance at the provincial competition where we placed in the top 15 overall. It is my goal to one day combine my passion for business and technology in my career.

Sports have always played an important role in my life as well.  I have been a member of my high school basketball, badminton, alpine ski and dragon boat teams, and my crowning athletic achievement has been getting my black belt in karate.

Giving back to the community is also an integral part of who I am.  I have achieved this through my involvement with Habitat for Humanity and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Why did you choose the School of Accounting & Finance at TRSM over other schools?

The School of Accounting & Finance at TRSM is a very unique program at an exceptional university. The Ted Rogers Co-op program and various Boot Camps to teach skills necessary to succeed in the workplace are what initially attracted me to TRSM. And being located in the heart of the financial district offers unparalleled opportunities for students, especially when combined with Co-op.

Along with its cutting-edge curriculum, TRSM also offers a vibrant and welcoming environment. The Ryerson students I met at the Open House were all extremely friendly, and I was told by a TRSM graduate that the Professors are always open to questions and teach in a student-oriented manner.

The numerous SAF-specific extracurricular activities and clubs further contributed to my decision to attend the School of Accounting & Finance. I also wanted to be part of the university that had the foresight to launch one of the world’s most successful start-up incubators – the DMZ.

What does receiving the President’s National Entrance Scholarship mean to you?

I am very honoured to receive the President’s National Entrance Scholarship, as winning this prestigious award is a major achievement of my education. I am proud that all my hard work was recognized through this scholarship, and I know it will continue to motivate me to work hard and meet the exciting challenges offered by Ryerson University.

Receiving this scholarship allows me the freedom to pursue my extracurricular interests and contribute to university life. I am very thankful for being offered this amazing opportunity, and am elated to bring my passion and skills to the School of Accounting & Finance and TRSM.

Are you interested in doing Co-op at TRSM?

Co-op at TRSM is what differentiates it from other business schools, offering students the incredible opportunity to gain valuable skills, build important connections and get a career head-start.

The Co-op program was a significant factor in choosing to come to Ryerson as I believe that it is crucial to the development of real-world experience, professional networks and career building skills. Another advantage of Co-op is gaining valuable experience in multiple workplaces and companies. The unique Co-op program Boot Camps intensively train participants in workplace-related skills specifically requested by employers.

What are you hoping to get out of the Accounting & Finance program at TRSM?

In addition to gaining an extensive knowledge of accounting and finance that will prepare me for a successful career, I hope to develop analytical problem-solving skills, and grow as a professional. I am looking forward to meeting like-minded people and creating connections and life-long friendships with my classmates.

What are your career goals?

One of my career goals is to combine my passion for business and technology by working in the Fintech field. I intend to have a positive impact on the financial sector by inspiring and motivating other professional women to break barriers and challenge societal norms. My goal is to attain leadership positions where I can build inspiring and motivating work environments. Through my career, I also aim to give back to the community by working with various charities.

Do you have anything else to add about coming to TRSM?

I am thrilled to start the next chapter of my life at Ryerson University’s TRSM. The amazing opportunities and unique program are what make TRSM so special and give students a competitive career advantage. I am looking forward to contributing my passion for business, technology and entrepreneurship to the vibrant TRSM community in addition to making life-long friendships and lasting connections.
